Dear Prime Minister, Dear Minister,
Each year, around 1,500 pilot whales, those black-skinned peaceful and kind cetaceans, are driven towards bays to be killed by a group of drunken hunters who, thirsty for blood, dot it just for "sport" and in the name of an antiquated "tradition". Unfortunately, the sociability of these mammals makes them an easy prey. Being extremely curious, they approach men without suspicion while teenagers are invited to participate in the killing to demonstrate they enter adult age. Some inhabitants of these islands don’t hesitate to pride themselves publicly on their ability to kill with pleasure each one of these big harmless cetaceans, gouging their eyes out with knives or disembowelling pregnant females to extract their foetuses still wriggling! These abominations take place in Europe and, we, Europeans, are deeply shocked by such absolutely barbaric customs!
Faroese people dive repeatedly heavy metal gaffs of more than 2 kilos in the quivering flesh of these unfortunate whales, until they are hooked. Once the cetaceans are correctly hooked to the boat, whale hunters stab them through the back of the neck with a whaling knife of 15 centimetres, cutting off the blubber, the main arteries and the nervous system. The surrounding sea tends to acquire a shade of bloody red and whales wail and suffer a more or less lengthy death, depending on the skills of their killers.

The Globicephala melas subspecies has been protected since 1970 by the Bern convention (Appendix II) and the habitat directive (Appendix IV).
These bloodsheds are all the more unacceptable as these coward killings are unnecessary to human life and as Denmark signed both the Bern Convention and the Bonn Convention on the conservation of Migratory Species which protect Globicephala.
You must also know that numerous factors are causing Globicepala to become extinct, the main threats being accidents due to sea traffic, pollution and annual slaughters in the Faroe Islands.
As Patrick Hof, of New York Mont Sinaï School of Medicine (USA), co-discoverer of spindle neurons in whales with Estel van der Gucht of the New York Consortium in Evolutionary Primatology (NYCEP) states: "It is extremely clear to me that these cetaceans are very intelligent. We must be cautious about our anthropomorphic interpretation of whales' intelligence. Their potential as for high-level brain functions is clearly demonstrated and is now confirmed by the existence of a neuronal type that was, we thought, only observed in hominids and their closest relatives". "Whales communicate using a wide variety of sounds, they recognise their own sounds and they can make new ones. They also form coalitions to perform hunting strategies they teach to the youngest members, and have a social network whose level of evolution is similar to the one shown by humans and great apes".

There is no doubt that Globicephala specimens are intelligent and sensitive mammals with extremely complex social systems, cultures and languages and, therefore, with a capacity to feel, as humans do, distress, anguish and despair beyond physical suffering. A crime is then being committed against one of the most intelligent species on earth.
For all these reasons, Dear Prime Minister, Dear Minister, we appeal to your compassion and intelligence in order to eradicate these unbearable massacres which are taking place in the Faroe Islands.
Yours faithfully,
PRENOM, NOM
VILLE, PAYS
